Raised in South London, Sophy Gardner gained a First Class degree in geography before joining the Royal Air Force. She became an air operations officer and went on to head up the RAF’s transport and refuelling operations squadron at the time of 9/11 and received the MBE for her service. Sophy was quickly promoted through the ranks and was the first woman in every job to which she was posted. She is a graduate of the US State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Programme. Sophy left the RAF as Wing Commander in 2011. She has her own company working with service charities and organisations and in 2012, was event director for the opening of the Bomber Command Memorial in London. In 2015, Sophy stood as Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Gloucester, and is President of the Royal British Legion Gloucester City branch. She volunteers with Gloucester Foodbank and campaigns on women’s rights. Sophy will continue to speak on domestic violence as an Ambassador of HGT.
